Owl sync
The mention of alien abduction and a simultaneous owl—and me
audio reading of this short essay
I’m living in a big house in a beautiful spot in the Pacific Northwest. We have chickens in the yard, and each night as the sun sets, either I or one of the roommates will go outside to close up the coop after they’re all in for the night.
A few weeks ago I was the one who closed them in, then I left the pen, closed the gate, stepped onto the driveway, and was walking toward the house. My roommate Lucretia (a pseudonym) was standing on the front porch, and I told her, “The chickens are in for the night.”
She said, “I was taken again last night.” Then she looked past me and said, “An owl just flew by, it passed right behind you.”
These two things were spoken without pausing, like one statement.
I spun around but saw nothing. She was maybe fifteen feet away from me, and described what she saw, “A big owl flew from left to right, it came out of that tree—” she pointed, “—and flew over the lawn, and it looked like it flew into those trees over there.” She pointed to the forest on the opposite side of the chicken pen.
She added, “From where I’m standing, it passed right behind you.”
Okay, I should explain some things. When she said, “I was taken again last night.” She meant abducted by aliens.
Lucretia is a lifelong experiencer. She worked with Budd Hopkins in the 90s, and has been chronicling her experiences for well over ten years on an amazing blog At Spiral’s End. We did a really strong interview on my podcast back in 2010 (linked HERE, or you can listen on the little player at the bottom of this post).
She’s been having a lot of contact in the previous weeks, and she’s been keeping me updated. My room is on the opposite side of the house, and I haven’t heard or sensed anything, but I trust her. She can tell her story a lot better than I can, so here’s her version, on her blog, linked HERE.
So, on that evening she said, “I was taken again last night,” and this was simultaneous with and owl passing right behind me. And I’m the owl guy. I’ve spent almost twenty years obsessively exploring the connections between owls and UFO contact.
Lemme say this again: She had been abducted the night before, and told me as an owl flew directly behind me—and I’m the owl guy.
This is a perfect example of what I’ve been trying to understand.
Back to that night. After Lucretia carefully explained what she saw, we walked over to the spot where the owl entered the forest on the opposite side of the chicken pen. She described the size and color, and I thought it might have been a barred owl. Part of the reason I said that is I’ve seen a handsome barred owl around the property a handful of times over the last year.
It was getting dark, so it would have been difficult to see anything in the dense forest, but I wanted to try. I walked alone down a path that ran along the edge of the forest. The trees were inky black against the gray glow of the twilight sky. I was doubtful I would find anything, but then I saw the outline of what looked like a giant owl perched on top of a dead fir tree. I tried to make some sense out of what I was seeing. The silhouette of this “owl” clearly had two ear tufts, but it seemed too big and too still—like some abstraction of an owl. I waited a long time, and it never moved.
The next morning I went out and stood in the same spot, and in the daylight saw a dead Douglas fir with its top broken off about thirty feet up. The scraggly top was owl shaped, complete with ear tufts, so no mysterious four foot tall owl.
Excellent interview with Lucretia, with glorious 2010 Low-Fi audio

So interesting! 🧐
I was reading about your book The Messengers last night and one of my best friends texted me today and said “I had a wild dream about you last night and an owl” 🦉 so my radar is on now!
